A real-life “horse-whisper”, he eschews he vidolence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment.Buck possesses near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses -and people – with his understand, compassion and respect.
Only ONE Weird Wednesday to Be Experienced!

On Wednesday 18 January, Kristian Fletcher’s Weird Wednesdays - a monthly off-beat movie night – returns to Tribal Theatre, 346 George St Brisbane.

After rumours of the cinema closing over the last couple of months, Tribal Theatre - Brisbane’s oldest cinema – will remain open in 2012 for film festivals and special events.

Kristian Fletcher will continue his monthly movie nights throughout the year.

Since July 2010, Kristian Fletcher has filled the Weird Wednesdays bill with some of the strangest movies in the history of cinema and this January’s double feature is no exception…

Two of the most outrageous cult classics of all time are brought back to the big screen one rare retro screening…

The Who’s TOMMY (1975) (M) - 6.30pm

PLOT: A deaf, dumb and blind man goes on to become a pinball champion.
With an all-star cast including Ann-Margret, Roger Daltrey, Elton John, Tina Turner, Keith Moon, Jack Nicholson, Eric Clapton and Oliver Reed.
The Who’s iconic rock opera was brought to the screen by director Ken Russell. The late director (who passed away earlier this month) said Tommy was the favourite of his movies.
The sung-through plot has been fashioned into a 105-minute music video with striking visuals, star-studded cameos and fantastic music.

MYRA BRECKINRIDGE (1970) - 8.15pm

PLOT: Myron undergoes a sex-change operation before setting off on a mission to Hollywood to claim an inheritance.
Starring Raquel Welch, John Huston, Farrah Fawcett, Mae West, Tom Selleck and Rex Reed!
Slapped with an X rating when first released, this marked a dark period in the movie-output of 20th Century Fox and almost bankrupted the studio in 1970.
Based on the novel by Gore Vidal – this movie has to be seen to be believed!
Both controversial and very rare, few cinemas have dared to show it… until now!

Synopsis:

A stellar cast delivers the goods in Philippe Le Guay’s smash-hit upstairs/downstairs comedy, THE WOMEN ON THE 6TH FLOOR.

It’s Paris, 1962. The marvellous Fabrice Luchini (Potiche) stars as wealthy stockbroker Jean-Louis Jouvert, who lives a staid bourgeois existence with his perfectly-presented socialite wife (Sandrine Kiberlain). But when the family’s maid abandons them, into the residence comes Maria (Natalia Verbeke): young, hardworking, and – quelle horreur – Spanish! Remarkably, it doesn’t take long for the building to become enchanted by the new arrival; Maria rallies the friendship of the other servants on the sixth floor (fabulous turns contributed by two of Almodóvar’s favourite señoritas, Carmen Maura and Lola Dueñas) and soon, the balance of the household ruptures into wild, cross-cultural chaos…

Directed with verve and charm by the talented Le Guay, THE WOMEN ON THE 6TH FLOOR is a warm-hearted delight, in any language. Luchini and Kiberlain are terrific as the austere couple brought to life and then – potentially – breaking point, when Jean-Louis literally discovers a room of his own.

After premiering at the 2011 Berlin International Film Festival to a standing ovation, THE WOMEN ON THE 6TH FLOOR became a massive hit at the French box office earlier this year – fuelled by enthusiastic word of mouth the film achieved over 2.5 million admissions. Now it’s Australia’s turn!

ATTACK THE BLOCK is a fast, funny, frightening movie that pits a teen gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing estate into a sci-fi playground. A tower block into a fortress under siege. And teenage street kids into heroes. It’s inner city versus outer space.

From writer and first-time director Joe Cornish and all-star producer Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. theWorld, Shaun of the Dead) comes an irrepressibly high-spirited pop culture whirlwind. Snagging the coveted Midnight Feature award at SXSW for best cult film, Attack the Block is pure, unadulterated fun, careening between gritty suspense, wry humour and out-and-out alien slaughterfest, South London style.

Synopsis:

In a small, remote mountain top primary school in the Kenyan bush, hundreds of children are jostling for a chance for the free education newly promised by the Kenyan government. One new applicant causes astonishment when he knocks on the door of the school. He is Maruge (Oliver Litondo), an old Mau Mau veteran in his eighties, who is desperate to learn to read at this late stage of his life. He fought for the liberation of his country and now feels he must have the chance of an education so long denied – even if it means sitting in a classroom alongside six-year-olds.

Moved by his passionate plea, head teacher Jane Obinchu (Naomie Harris who will be seen later as Moneypenny in Bond23), supports his struggle to gain admission and together they face fierce opposition from parents and officials who don’t want to waste a precious school place on such an old man.

Full of vitality and humour, the film explores the remarkable relationships Maruge builds with his classmates some eighty years his junior. Through Maruge’s journey, we are taken back to the shocking untold story of British colonial rule 50 years earlier where Maruge fought for the freedom of his country, eventually ending up in the extreme and harsh conditions of the British detention camps.
