Synopsis:

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE follows the story of six young people in the throws of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, who learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.

This hilarious tale of overachievers’ angst chronicles the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show’s Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes; a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Presented by the students of Harvest Rain’s Musical Theatre Internship Program, this production features a young cast of Queensland’s brightest up and coming musical theatre stars, led by first time director and second year intern Meg Ham, choreographer George Canham and music director Sophie Mangan.

Don’t miss the hilarity and frivolity of THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE. For your chance to win a double pass on Wednesday the 17th of August at 7.30pm at the Mina Parade Warehouse comment below and tell us the longest word you know.

We have 2 double passes for a performance of EDWARD GANT’S AMAZING FEATS OF LONELINESS, 5pm Sunday, 15 May at the La Boite Theatre, Musk Ave, Kelvin Grove.

For the chance to win tickets, you must answer the following question:

“What is the best way to capture magic and mayhem as one?”

Post your answer on Twitter (with hashtag #EGant), Facebook, or below!

Season Starts 14 May

SYNOPSIS:

What I bring you now is no mere Freak Show. You will gasp, yes, and you will marvel and you will see your share of grotesquerie. But the deformities on show this evening are not the deformities of the frame, but those of the heart and mind.Edward Gant

This wickedly funny play by Scottish playwright Anthony Neilson is writing at its most exhilarating: a celebration of the magical, imaginative act of theatre.

It is 1881 and the night of Edward Gant’s final performance. Together with his three fellow performers, Gant will present an extraordinary spectacle of melancholia, madness and music through the retelling of a collection of adult fables and fairy-tales.

We meet Sanzonetta, the Pimple-Faced Girl, whose face erupts into pustules that bear beautiful pearls. We also meet Edgar, the heartbroken lover who travels the globe to cure his torment with the help of a fake fakir.

But while Gant and his company enact these bizarre and beautiful theatrical vignettes, it is clear that there is another mystery upon the stage: that of Mr Edward Gant himself…

Director Sarah Goodes‘ sparkling production uses extravagant costumes to create Gant’s wondrous worlds, co-designed byRenée Mulder and the Australian fashion house Romance Was Born. Think a mix of circus, glam rock, national costume, vaudeville, music hall, punk and high fashion.

Incredibly funny, deeply irreverent and strangely moving, Edward Gant is set to run riot.

Season Starts 28 April

SYNOPSIS:

The show that audiences adored is back and Barder than ever…

Is Shakespeare still relevant? It’s the first rehearsal for the year 12′s Performance Task and Lachlan and Nerys know that with their knowledge of The Bard they cannot fail. But their allocated group members Jay and Rob don’t know the difference between Shakespeare and Schwarzenegger.

As this foursome discuss, debate and rehearse their assignment, not only do they find themselves unravelling a few school yard rumours, but they become swept up into some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, Othello, Romeo & Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, Titus Andronicus and a few more… proving that Mr. Will definitely still knows how to shake 400 years on.

Fast-paced, surprising and hilarious, catch STATESPEARE before its four-month national tour.

We have 5 double passes for a preview performance of JEKYLL AND HYDE – THE MUSICAL, presented by Blue Fish Theatrical Productions, 8pm Thursday, April 7 at the Schonell Theatre, The University of Queensland, St Lucia.

For the chance to win tickets, you must answer the following question:

“Throughout history, the story of “Jekyll and Hyde” has seen a number of representations in cinema, stage and literature.

Post your answer on Twitter (with hashtag #JekyllHyde), Facebook, or below!

Season Starts 7 April

SYNOPSIS:

An evocative tale of the eternal battle between good and evil, Jekyll & Hyde the Musical is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his father’s mental illness lies in the separation of Man’s evil nature from his good, Doctor Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of late 19th century London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde. After gradually losing control, Jekyll is forced into a face-off: will Jekyll end Hyde’s reign of terror and regain his former life? Or will Hyde’s evil win the epic struggle between these polar twins?

In the tradition of popular musical thrillers Phantom of the Opera and Sweeney Todd, Jekyll and Hyde the Musical will be a captivating, suspenseful and gut-wrenchingly spectacular night at the theatre.

We have 2 double passes for a performance of BOY GIRL WALL, 5pm Sunday, September 18, at the La Boite Theatre, Musk Ave, Kelvin Grove.

The first three shows are sold out – so make you grab your tickets now (or take your chances at winning some!) before you miss out again!

For the chance to win tickets, you must answer the following question:

“What type of puppet would you use to represent yourself?”

Post your answer on Twitter (with hashtag #BoyGirlWall), Facebook, or below!

Season Starts 15 September

SYNOPSIS:

Brisbane’s best little comedy is back with a big heart, BOY GIRL WALL has been re-drawn for La Boite’s main stage from 15-25 September, hot on the heels of sell-out seasons at Metro Arts and the Adelaide Fringe – not to mention La Boite back in April.

This is the story of Thom and Alethea, two neighbours in a West End apartment block and the wall that stands between them, who has decided they belong together. Using chalk, sock puppets, a projector and over two-dozen characters, The Escapists spin a tall tale of whimsy and architectural enlightenment.

BOY GIRL WALL is a search for the profound in a world determined to be anything but. It is theatre at its most intimate and beautiful. This is not a love story, it’s a story about love…

Reviews:

Leith Reed: Boy Girl Wall is wonderful!! It’s a witty, whimsical, hilarious hour and a half; part stand-up routine, part sweet-but-not-sickening love story. What a ride: the entire audience erupted into laughter, applause and at time “oohs and aaahs” of wonder along with me as Lucas Stibbard brought dozens of characters and sets to life with his …genius acting/comedic timing and a humble piece of chalk. Literally. It was delightful, dirty at times (you don’t want to know what he did to that sock puppet), and so deliciously imaginative, I was hooked from the moment I watched Stibbard wake and quickly sketch his alarm clock so he could hit the snooze button to quiet its beeping. I’m high on endorphins from all the laughing. Whoever you are reading this, trust me, YOU’LL LOVE IT!!

Oh my god Nerida – that was hilarious and sweet – the whimsy in it reminded me a little of Amelie. Thanks so much for the tickets. What an intelligent piece of comedy gold!! I saw Lucas Stibbard in Zig Zag street at the La Boite a few years ago and I liked him then – but I loved him tonight. It even gave me chills. Thanks for an awesome start to tonight
