Synopsis:

After sell-out seasons in London’s West End and New York, David Harrower’s controversial Olivier Award-winning Blackbird at last receives its Queensland premiere this April as part of La Boite’s inaugural Indie Season.
In a debris-flled factory lunchroom, one-time lovers Ray and Una are reunited. As they sort through secrets and self-deceptions, it becomes clear that theirs was no ordinary love affair. Fifteen years ago when the three-month relationship began, Una was just 12-years-old and Ray was her 40-year-old neighbour.
Now regarded as a leading playwright of his generation, acclaimed Scottish playwright David Harrower is as much
respected for his contemporary workings of classics (including Büchner’s Woyzeck and Chekhov’s Ivanov) as he is for his ground breaking new texts: Knives in Hens, 365 (in conjunction with the National Theatre of Scotland) and the proposed flm version of Blackbird.
Likewise, 23rd Productions is no stranger to success having produced celebrated productions of Closer (2007),
MOTORTOWN (2008) and The Pillowman (2009), as well as a new work for the Brisbane Festival last year

REVIEWS:

Pauline Elphinstone: Just saw Blackbird at La Boite. The subject matter is confronting making both my friend and I shift in our seats. This of course is the intention.
The performances were powerful, the subject matter dark.
It’s about a socially and legally unacceptable relationship but it was interesting in that it revealed the motivations and underlying feelings of both of the characters at the time. An insightful look into a subject most people don’t want to look into. Hmmm interesting, disturbing, not very uplifting.

Nerida Hart: Wow. What something that will make you question every single thought that every runs through your brain? Question your basis of your morals? Go check out “Blackbird” at LaBoite. You won’t be disappointed.

In short it is a performance about a man and a woman coming together after 20 years. The crux of it is that Ray (or Peter as he likes to be called now) was 40 then, Una was 12. You’ve already got thoughts that just flood through your brain already don’t you? David Harrower has done a wonderful job to present this story to us by shocking us and bringing out all of our underlying thoughts that we didn’t know existed. He does such a great job I found myself feeling sorry for the “abuser”, angry at the “victim”, confused at the situation, and just plain gob-smacked that it took me a few days to figure out where things lie in my head all over again.

Not for the cordial of us, but head along if you like something makes you think – you won’t regret it. Check it out while you still can: Blackbird at LaBoite is running until 25 April.

Luke Venables: I just say La Boite’s production of Blackbird thanks to @reviewbrisbane. This is what I thought of it.http://bit.ly/9yukyS
