Synopsis:
Jason Robert Brown has been hailed as one of Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim, and his extraordinary, jubilant theatre music has been heard all over the world. In Songs for a New World, Brown transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge 57 storeys above Fifth Avenue to meet an array of characters from disillusioned housewives and warring couples to Mrs Santa Claus and Christopher Columbus. These are the stories and characters of today; the songs for a new world.
Featuring the powerhouse talents of Queensland’s top music theatre performers Angela Harding, Luke Kennedy, Naomi Price and Luke Venables under the direction of Queensland’s undisputed king of musical theatre Tim O’Connor, this diverse and exquisitely crafted musical is the pathway into theatre for the next generation of audiences.

REVIEWS:
Warren Berry: Just returned from Harvest Rain’s performance of Jason Robert Browns “Songs for a new world”. All i can say is wow.
The 4 main cast members were outstanding. But Luke Kennedy stole the show with an amazing tenor voice, clear full and spot on. The variation from the orginal was a little different ( it was written for 4 Actors only ) but the addition 12 ensemble members helped fill the sound and stage.
The show flowed very well and dispite some slight slips with the sound was a very enjoyable performance. Would recommend anyone with an interest in musical theatre or live music in general should get to the Judith Wright Centre and check out this great Show.
@nat_collins: @reviewbrisbane #SongsForANewWorld was a breathtaking adventure for the audience from the opening riff in “A New World” to the final note in “Hear my Song” the cast of Harvest Rain delivered a polished performance…. Congratulations to the director, cast, crew and band. A must see for Brisbane Audiences!!#SongsForANewWorld
Nerida Hart: This was my first performance I have seen by the Harvest Rain Theatre Company, and if “Songs for a New World” is any indication of the quality and performance that is expected, it won’t be the last.
Written by Jason Robert Brown, Songs for a new world captured my imagination (and my goosebumps) from the first number. We were thrown into a world unlike my own, but scarily similar on so many levels. We are taken on a journey seeing snippets of lives mostly forming around decisions that need to be made to continue on their journey.
The show could not have been complete without the cast and crew who did a wonderful job. Naomi Price, Luke Venables, Angela Harding and Luke Kennedy were flawless in their portrayal and performance of their numerous characters. A special mention needs to be said of Luke Kennedy’s superb voice, especially with his final solo number hitting such a high note perfectly on pitch which resonated and left the whole audience in awe.
I fully recommend getting yourself along to the Judith Wright Centre and seeing “Songs for a New World” while time still lasts – you won’t regret it!

DEFINITELY Wave of mutilation by the Pixies
Other Side by Red Hot Chilli Pepper
Oink floyd another brick in the wall. part 2.
“The World Goes Round” – by John Kander and Fred Ebb. An unashamedly loud and proud musical theatre standard written in the 1970s. A simple but haunting melody. A short story of lyrics which are universally relevant to us all.
Stormy Weather. I remember hearing this in a movie about Frank Sinatra. He sang this when young and was criticised by his teacher for not putting enough emotion into it. As a musician, it has inspired me to always look for meaning and metaphor in my music, and to play it with feeling and maturity.
Kissing in the Rain from the Great Expectation soundtrack. Literally changed my life.
