Synopsis:

Thom Pain has an itch to scratch, and with your help he might just find it.   Thom has a few things he needs to share with you, like the time his girlfriend woke up one morning and decided… Oh, but he’ll get back to you about that one…   With nothing but a sharp suit and some even sharper stories, Thom is an everyman trying to make sense of the world, and his place in it.   Will Eno’s underground hit (Edinburgh, London, New York) gurgles with the grim humour and pain of life.

Luke Mackness: Thom Pain (based on nothing) starring Jason Klarwein as Thom. (Location – QTC, the new! BILLE BROWN STUDIO)
Theatre in a nutshell…Can’t be bothered reading my review below? Skipping straight to the overall score…Score – 8/10
(now read why)
Let me start by saying, this is a one man monologue written by Will Eno about 5 years ago. Has been performed in places like London and New York, received awards and nominations within prestigious theatre circles…

Q: Was there exciting props / sets?
A: No. Did it matter? Not really…the stage was almost empty…but I admit it suited the production perfectly.
Q: Could I take my grandma?
A: There was a good mix of elderley…some gasping throughout the whole show unimpressed with the odd foul joke/language…others roaring with laughter…depends what sort of granny you have.
Q: My boyfriend is a brick layer….would he understand the story?
A: What story? There were a lot of words, wordy words and mostly very intelligent humour. Your boyfriend would be a combination of uncomfortable sweating and intense boredom.
Q: I like drama, how dramatic was it?
A: Ohh it was dramatic, the highs and lows of one person’s philosophical journey and nothingness…very dramatic.
Q: Would I get hungry?
A: It started off intriguing, I was hanging on every moment and every word. That was for 10 minutes, and then I was bored, but not hungry.
Q: Would I see it again?
A: Absolutely YES! I went home wondering if I wasted my time…days later and I go home wondering why I shouldn’t go back.

P.S. It was a fun and refreshing one and a half hours of philosophical thinking and wonderment at the brilliance of a well written and executed performance…everything you want when you go to the theatre. The End.

@flloydpk : @reviewbrisbane #qtc #Thompain reduces #WillEno‘s passionate existential text to quiet study in public self reflection of nice guy. Fun ***

@lanipauli : #thompain was confronting, comfortably awkward, amusing and beautiful. Do see it if you can!

Nerida Hart: You want to know what Thom Pain is about? Simply put: “I don’t know, whatever”. Don’t let that deter you however. Jason Klarwein does an amazing job at representing Thom Pain (who is apparently based on nothing) in this new QTC production. The show which has been a huge hit for Will Eno on Broadway has made its way to our own Billie Brown Studios.

The show is basically a monologue that gets you to think about life, fear, love, death and just about anything in between. You sit in the theatre laughing along, not realising what you are laughing at, only to come to the conlusion a couple of hours later that something might not just be right about your life. Did the show you just saw help you change your thinking in a philosophical way? No, it couldn’t have. Or did it? It was basically just a man talking about his life.

While this isn’t much of a description of what goes on in the performance, I definitely recommend you get out and view this show for yourself, you will not be disappointed. It makes you think without realising it yourself, but enjoying the journey all the same.
